Rayya El Zein

Principal Investigator

Rayya El Zein studies change in subcultural communities. As Director of Partnerships at Code for Science & Society, her current work thinks with public technologists around the globe about how to build sustainability and equity into their organizational structures. Rayya completed a PhD in Theatre and Performance from the CUNY Graduate Center in 2016. Her book manuscript exploring notions of the political in Arabic-language rap and hip hop is forthcoming as Filling the Head: Listening to Rap in Arabic from Indiana University Press. She convened the Cultural Constructions of Race and Racism in the MENA/SWANA Forum published in Lateral in 2021.
